Dr. Anne M. Akol is an Associate Professor of Entomology at the Department of Zoology, Entomology and Fisheries Sciences, Makerere University. Her research interests encompass the management of pests in agriculture, honeybee health and pollination ecology. The abstract being presented is part of work undertaken (with funding from RUFORUM) to assess the status of arthropod pests of honeybee colonies in Uganda and devise management options for these pests. Other current research in Dr Akol’s lab is on bee pollinator diversity in Uganda.

Antoni Bairo is a researcher at the University of Dodoma working in electrochemical sensing technology and developing monitoring software for chemical analysis. He has graduated Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and now he is also pursuing Masters of Science in Chemistry. Apart from his carrier he also conduct private studies in computer programing, electronics, artificial intelligence and communication technologies. He had experiences in full stack software development, Internet of things, electrode design and fabrication, chemical analysis, and quantum mechanics simulations. His interest is to develop digital instruments for laboratory and music. He achieved to construct cost effective Virtual Dj machine, real time monitoring systems for multiple industrial product quality parameters, and automated system for monitoring honey quality while growing in the hive and notifying a beekeeper an optimal time to harvest.

After attaining a bachelor’s degree in Geography and environmental studies, I decided to get directly involved in the environmental conservation industry. By joining the Friends of Usambara society, I have contributed to conservation firsthand. I first got to work with the Friends of Usambara society in 2021 where I took my practical training and the motivation that I got from the organization made me devoted to conserving the environment because I understand the contribution of each person in making the world a better place. I, therefore, joined the Friends of Usambara society in 2022 as a full-time employee because In have to be a part in this very important initiative.

She is a learner honey and hive products judge as part of the South African Honey Judges’ Guild

I am currently completing my MSc in Entomology with the Social Insects Research Group at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. I am interested in the role drones play within the hive as they are often overlooked or misunderstood and that investigating their communication could lead us to ask fascinating new questions involving drones.
